A főrészben Heltainak a történeti előzményeket összefoglaló rövid bevezetője után Antonio Bonfini Rerum Hungaricarum decades című történeti munkájának Mátyás királyra vonatkozó fejezetei, vagyis: a harmadik dekád kilencedik és tizedik könyve, valamint a negyedik dekád első hat könyve található. eltai Gáspár e tudományos igényű szövegközlésének alapjául az erdélyi Besztercéről származó Martin Brenner gondozásában Bázelben 1543-ban megjelent Bonfini-kiadás (RMK III 344) szolgált. Ebben azonban még csak az első három dekád jelent meg. Szikszai Fabricius Balázs a bevezetőben megírja, hogy Csáky Mihály fejedelmi kancellár adta át a negyedik dekád első hat könyvének kéziratát Heltainak kinyomtatásra, s a mű végén a még lappangó négy könyv felkutatását kérte olvasóitól. Antonio Bonfininek, Mátyás és II. Ulászló udvari történetírójának teljes műve először Bázelben 1568-ban Joannes Sambucus gondozásában jelent meg. (Hungarian)
