A főrész 100+1 ezópusi mesét tartalmaz. A kutatások eredményeként megállapítható, hogy Heltai más kiadást használt fordításához, mint Pesti Gábor (RMNy 17). A XV. századi Heinrich Steinhöwel-féle Aesopus-kiadásnak egy Sebastian Brant által kiegészített és a XVI. század első felében is közkedvelt változatát megtoldotta és olvasóinak életkörülményeihez alkalmazta. A 66. és 73. meséhez még egy másik német forrást használt, a 99. pedig saját összeállítása vándormotívumokból. A mesékhez fűzött Értelme címmel bevezetett tanulságok, a német eredeti mintájára, Heltai egyedi alkotásai. (Hungarian)
